WHAT MAKES CREATIVE OUTPUT DECLINE
THE YOUTHFUL DECLINE
SCHOLASTIC THINKING
schools emphasizes conformity - one true way of thinking
success is based on what is wanted, not what is interesing
marks awarded for nice witing & regurrgitation, not what is creative & lateral thinking
in university, we learn to never question the wisdom & knowledge of our professors
PRICE OF ACCEPTANCE
conformity - price of living in the modern world
to live with other people, you must follow their rules & values
more of what you cannot do rather than what you can do
doing what others do & not reinventing our world everyday
THE TRAPS OF ADULTHOOD
HABITUAL TRAP
e.g: finding the best route home & sticking with it even if we get stuck in traffic
falling into a number of cognitive traps
human habit: once comfortable with doing something one way, we get comfortable & do not change/ vary it.
EXPERT TRAP
experts spend more time defending their hill than building it further
assuming you know it all
obligated to the expectations of the knowledge that others put upon you, unable to say "i dont know, lets give it a try"
UNINTELLIGENT DISCLOSURE
intelligence related to creativity
premature closure of quick thinking
bright people understand something quickly & stops further divergent thinking
some benefits from slower & more exploratory thinking
we use 80% of our creative potential at age 5
we invent daily, at a remarkable rate
by age 12, creative output decline to about 2%
HOW TO STAY CREATIVE
DO DIFFERENT THINGS
keep doing different things
read different books & papers, talk to different people,go to different places
seek to synergize & synthesize
take opportunity to regenerate your generative powers
THE NOT-SO AGED EFFECT
effects of aging
brain cells die off after 50
people have stayed creative through their lives are way above others
you can get better at creativity
creativity affects longevity; mentally active people live longer than those who stay physically active
GROUP VS INDIVIDUAL CREATIVITY
INDIVIDUAL
lead to original ideas
danger that the outcome are predetermined or limited to the idea originator way of thinking
free association iniatially yields irrational/ foolish outputs that later refined into more recognizable concepts
GROUP
brainstorming in groups generate more ideas, but may hinder revolutionary ideas
use the ideas of others for inspiration
use each others information for further simulation
current research suggests organization should adopt collectivistic/ group values - promote cooperation & productivity
individualistic values should be avoided because they incite destructive conflict & opportunism
research by Goncalo et.al: individualistic instructed to be creative are more creative than collectivistic group given the same instructions
individualistic values may be beneficial when creativity is a salient goal
