IMMUNOLOGICAL PROCESSES
BARRIERS TO INFECTION
Skin - defensins, AMP's, epithelial cells with tight junctions, natural flora
GI tract - acidity, enzymes in saliva, flow of food, AMP's, natural flora
Respiratory tract - mucous/cilia, enzymes from nasal secretions, AMP's, natural flora
Genitourinary tract - flow of urine/sperm, mucous, acidity in vaginal secretions, zinc in semen, AMP's, normal flora
Eyes - lysozymal secretions in tears, AMP's, normal flora
IMMUNE SYSTEM COMPONENTS
Tissues - e.g. lymph nodes, spleen
Cells
-
-
Macrophage - biggest phagocyte, antigen presenting cell
Dendritic cell - most important antigen presenting cell, works in lymph nodes after taking up antigen
Lymphocytes
B cells - activated to form plasma effector cells that produce antibodies or long lived memory cells
-
Molecules - e.g. antibodies, complement

VACCINATION
-
Secondary response - much quicker and more intense, memory cells allow infection to be fought more efficiently
