Eschatology
The four last things
Death: christians believe that even though the earthly body will come to an end a persons life does not. The soul passes beyond the veil of death to be with God. For christians death is a transition into a new phase of life.
Judgement: Christians believe that after death a person is judged fully by God in all his glory. In the presence of God's love people have the chance to accept responsibility for everything they have done.
Heaven: the state of eternal happiness in the presence of god. In Heaven all believers rejoice in the everlasting love God. Also all believers acknowledge the fact that God loves them. Heaven is the reward for those who have lived by God's love and guidance.
Hell: the state of total separation from God. Those people who choose to reject God choose to live eternally without his undying love that he has for all of his people.

The Paschal Candle
The Paschal Candle is used during the ester vigil and the light of the candle represents the light of Christ rising from the dead. destroying the power of sin and evil. The candle itself represents the risen Christ.
The design of the candle is very symbolic and the prayers said by the priest show the meanings of the symbol. As the priest traces the alpha and omega symbols as well as the numbers he says a prayer about how God's love for his people has no beginning, middle or end.
The priest inserts five little holders containing incense into the candle. This represents the five wounds that Christ had in his hands, feet and side during his crucifixion. As the priest does this he will say a prayer.
During the procession, a light is given to every member of the congregation. This shows that all believers share in the risen glory of Christ.
Christians believe that at a baptism the person being baptized is being filled with the holy spirit as well as Christ's glory. When a person is being baptized they are given a candle lit from the Paschal Candle and the priest will say another prayer.
At a funeral, a Paschal Candle is lit to show that the deceased has joined Christ in the resurrected life. The promise made by God to all believers through the resurrection of Jesus has now been fulfilled by the dead person.
Memorials for the dead
Catholics believe that in the body's resurrection everything will come into God;s presence. During a person's life their body is a temple of the holy spirit meaning their body should always be treated with dignity and respect ( even after death).
A tombstone indicates the location of a dead body. Many christian tombstones contain religious messages particularly the letters RIP this phrase is a prayer for the deceased to live in the presence of God.

Catholics are also allowed to cremate their loved loved ones. However it is advised that they do not scatter the ashes as a sign of respect. Catholics believe that the body dead/alive should be treated with dignity and respect.
Purgatory and Judgement
