Snow was everywhere, so you could barely see Joe, and the sounds of the wind also added tension.

Joe came off the cliff and dangled there. Also, at one point he was upside down, which emphasizes how helpless he was at the time.
I think there was a bit of taboo language when he came off, which really shows the audience how helpless and scared he is.
When Joe came off the cliff, a bunch of snow and ice fell on him, which tells the audience how fast and far he slid.
Joe was screaming and breathing heavily this whole time, while Simon has almost no idea what happened, which makes the audience want to keep watching.

Joe finds out he was dangling at about 80 feet, with a huge crevice underneath him.
In the background, you can vaguely hear some high tension music while you see the crevice with his POV.
Joe was turning around and around, trying to get his axe onto the cliff face, but he couldn't, and the loud and stong wind also added to the tension and how helpless Joe was.

Joe talked about how he knew what he had to do to save himself, but he couldn't, which creates high tension, and makes the audience wonder about what will happen next.
