Poison Gas
The first poison gas attack was in April 1915. The Germans released chlorine gas that wafted across no man's land into the British trenches
-
-
-
Mustard gas could burn, blind or slowly kill troops over 4-5weeks.
-
-
Tanks
-
-
-
-
Advanced ahead of the infantry, crushing barbed wire defences and spraying the Germans with machine gun fire
Aircraft
-
1914: planes were very primitive, unreliable and highly dangerous (casualties were very high)
-
As they developed into more effective machines, commanders used them for detailed reconnaissance work over enemy trenches
Enemy aircraft would be sent to shoot down enemy reconnaissance flights (this emerged in to 'dogfights' where pilots shot at each other with pistols and rifles)
Machine Guns
-
-
The job of infantrymen was to capture and hold on to enemy positions or defend any positions they already held
Artillery
Artillery bombardments by large heavy guns fired from a distance caused more casualties than any other weapon.
Two main jobs: to destroy enemy positions and defences so that they could be captured and to destroy enemy guns.
