FUNGI KINGDOM
CLASIFICATION OF FUNGI
PARASITES
They live at the expense of living animals and plants, and can cause diseases.
-
DECOMPOSERS
They live on the remains of dead plants and animals and transform into inorganic material useful for plants.
-
SYMBIOTIC FUNGI
They form a association with other kingdoms. Such as lichens, a mix between fungi and algae.
-
THEY CAN BE
Unicellular, such as yeast
-
Multicellular
The main part of the fungus, the mycelium, is made of rows of elongated cells that form branching threads, called hyphae.
-
Fungi compete with other organisms to obtain their food. One way of doing this is to produce substances, such as antibiotics to stop their competidors from developing, particularly bateria. We can use the antibiotics in our advantage to eliminate the bacteria that makes us ill.
-
They depend of heterotrophic nutrition, like animals, but their cells have vacuoles and cell walls but no chloroplasts.
