Tales from Outer Suburbia
The Water Buffalo.
Saliance of the buffalo juxtapose with his "uneeded nature" within the text itself, highlights notions such as - "we dont really know what we have till we lose it".
The ironic nature and language that showcases the idioms and irony that is present.
The meaning dependant on the audience. Not being fixed and allows them to decide the real outcomes.
Shaun Tan uses the drawing to allow the true perception of the Water bufflao to fester in the minds eye of the audience.
Eric
"its a cultural thing". - Eric is present with heaps of cultural misunderstanding and the assumptions.anything unordinary must be a cultural thing
The final illustration showcases how even the neglected items/objects can be highly impactful and similar to the shoe-horn (an object that only is meaningful to the beholder).
Shaun tan uses pictures instead of words in eric (still using words but also illustrations). Especially on page 11 " They weren't the kind of questions I had been expecting ". The use of illustrations to ask the questions. - the powerful part of this is that the illustrations allow the audience to understand what Eric is asking but also have no clue what the answer would be.
"AS long as he is happy" - this notion is presented with the curiosity of eric - represented through the facial expressions and body language of the character.
Broken Toys
Contrasting/juxtaposition of the illustrations of the toys, we can visually see (without imagination) the broken airplane and feel empathetic to the owner of the toy as we understand. The broken toy evokes emotions of sadness for the audience as with that toy great memories would have been made, and now are broken.
.
Broken toys wants the audience to not judge a book by its cover and discover the "mystery behind the mask" as it is our personality and action which truly shape meaning for others
The non-broken toy horse at the end encourages the audience to feel happy and excited as the toy has been fixed and the owner can now enjoy and have fun with it once again.
Distant Rain
The background color for each of the pages is related to the time which the "ball of poems" is being created. But it gradually gets darker, similarly with what is going on. ( creation of beautiful pomes ----> The ball searching for others, lost and forgotten ---->the unnoticed, not cared for ball of poetry ------>the shredding of the ball in the storm -----> Finally ending in light because all is good, as each piece of paper is special to an unexpected individual.)
Shaun tan designs Distant rain as a collauge from other texts written by others. - important as his handwriting is not presented almost hidden, like the poems he talks about with the text
Continuous rule of three " Large Huge Enormous, to emphasize the effect, The page with no words and just illustration presents the looming notion of the ball. Almost as if it the moon.
chiaroscuro is present throughout the entire short story, designed to create mystery and be representative of the night and day.
Long after the street sweepers have come and gone. the final line in Distant Rain, almost a proving notion that what te individual has read will always leave an effect even after it has been taken away.
The Amesia machine
The structure creates the amnesia machine as the central argument surrounded by articles of true atrocities ( kids dying, repression of civil liberty, good and evil, environmental crisis, Havoc in society)
A very visual and highly structured story. The main article " The Amnesia machine.
The structure is set out on newspaper print, presenting notions of many kinds to the audience. Some will take the words written as truth, Some with think they are contextual and require some realism to be applied.
The salience of the amnesia machine creates an utter irony, an unforgetable creation, soon to be forgotten
alert but not alarmed
Juxtapostion between Balistic missile and never look at them. The irony grants a humor, light-hearted feel, with a hint of mystery of why wouldnt they notice it.
Contrasting nature of butterflies and flowers on a ballistic missile a highly dangerous weapon being colored and painted, strong irony.
Our expedition
The literalist vs the Realist. A story that you can only assume that the Realist almost always wins.
Friendly bickering, similar to that of the relationship in The Shoe-Horn Sonata.
The tension created for a friendly rivalry not designed for hatred, this is identified by the audience with the sarcastic remarks and the consitent pestering in a harmless manner.
Notions of the world not being as big as we think.
Night of the turtle rescue
The imagery uses spotlight to emphasize the salient feature, surrounded by what appears to be factories highlights the overwhelming, intense state of the society of suburbia.
The textual highlight fade is symbolic of the night continuing, the mystery deepening. It also assists the audience to understand that the story is coming to the close and that the critical moments are ever present.
The mystery presented by the structure of Shaun Tan's short story, Night of the turtle rescue. Allows the audience to connect and evoke our Human connection, our drive to keep others safe especially one of our own. The descriptive nature - tiny limbs, small unreadable faces, voiceless mouths. Leads the audience assuming that they are saving children/babies. Making the rescue even more worth it.
