How to Solve Plastic Oceans
Reduce your use of single use plastics
We should be limiting items such a plastic bottles, cups, straws, plastic bags and take out containers
The easiest way to do this is refuse plastic single use items when offered
Eg: bring your own reusable bags to the supermarket.
Recycle
An obvious one is recycling. By recycling plastic we are ensuring that it doesn't end up in our oceans as it will be melted and reused.
Help around the community in beach clean ups
Help to remove plastic from our oceans and prevent them from getting there in the first place.
This is one of the best ways to unsure our oceans are not full of plastic and human waste.
You can join organisations such as:
Clean Up Australia and The Ocean Cleanup
Past Projects
'The largest cleanup in history'
In 2013, Boyan Slat dreamed of a project that could retrieve mountain loads of waste from our oceans.
This dream included a passive design and little equipment.
A year later his own non-government organisation, The Ocean Cleanup raised $2.2 million dollars through anon-profit campaign.
His Idea was:
Instead of deploying resources into the ocean to remove debris he planned to use the oceans current to clean waste instead. He wanted to deploy large barriers so ultimately debris would be trapped as they ran through the barriers.
The project began in late 2016 and is continuing to take plastic and waste out of our waters.
A water wheel for ocean waste
Located in Baltimore, USA.
Is powered by the power of water and sunlight
Collects debris running down the Jones Fall River
The rivers current turns the wheel and lifts trash out of the water and deposits it into a dumpster.
