Analysing qualitative data
Nature of qualitative data
associated with an interpretivit philosophy with subjective meanings and realities that are dependent on people's interpretation of the world around them (social constructionism)
Non-standardised, large and complex they need to be summarized, condensed and classified in order to answer the question to avoid an impressioninistic view.
To analyse you need to develop a conceptual framework. Which can always be clarified and redefined.
Approach
Deductive:
devise a framework based on theoretical propositions linked to the existing theory you used to formulate your reseach question and objectives
They may fail to express research participant's meanings.
Theoretical / descriptive framework: identify the main variables, components, themes and issues and the predicted relationships between them. Will rely on your prior experience and expectaitons.
Explanatory framework: based on a mixture of theory from both of your expectations and literature.
Inductive
the research is started without a theoretical framework.
You start by collecting data and exploring their relationships to see which themes or issues to focus on
The strategy may fail when the researcher started collecting data without proper assessment to develop a conceptual framework. as theories and explanations will emerge along the research process (grounded approach)
A clear purpose and preparation is required. You should start with a clearly defined research question and obejctives
analyse qualitative data to avoid being affected by existing theoretical constructs caused by a predetermined theoretical framework. They see to understand underlying meanings and develop a good fit between social reality and the theory. You need to eventually compare your grounded theory to existing theory .
It has an interactive nature process as data collection, analysis and the development and verification of propositions are interrelated and interactive. Analysis is conducted during and after the collection which shapes this process, (flexibility in process)
Important themes, patterns and relationships emerge from this interactive process. As your collected data may need re-categorising and re-coding so your data collection can be adjusted.
Danger: data overload and insufficient understanding may occur
