Nature Research Design
Purpose research design
Exploratory: ask questions and assess phenomena in a new light. Clarify your understanding of a problem. (searching literature, interviewing, focus group). It will be more likely that you will change direction or that you will narrow down the research.
Descriptive reasearch: portray an accurate profile. Clear picture of what to collect is important (extension exploratory).
-
Evaluative: find out how well something works / how effective the strategy is in business.. make comparisons between events.
Data
-
Qualitative data: non-numerical data, categorizing data (Data analysis procedure)
-
Theory development: inductive, because you test an existing theory.
-
Research strategies: action research, case, ethnography, grounded, narrative
Method choices
-
-
Mixed method: combines quantitative and qualitative data collection. Critical realism and pragmatism.
Concurrent mixed methods: separate use of qualitative and quantitative methods within the same time (single phrase). (how they can be interpreted together). OR Concurrent triangulation design: you use two or more sources in the same phase to observe how they support each other.
-
-
Embedded mixed methods: one methodology supports the other. Concurrent embedded = embeded one methodology within another while collecting data.
Time Horizon
Cross-sectional studies: studying a phenomenon at a particular time (snap chat), survey strategy, describe the incidence of a phenomenon.
-
Quality
-
Validity: appropriateness of the measures and the accuracy of the analysis. (properly assess quantitative data)
-
Internal: are the relationships accurate? causality, explanatory study
-
Threats: past or recent events, testing, instrumentation, mortality (dropping out), maturation (outside events that can affect), ambiguity about causal direction (not clarified)
-
Credibility: ensuring that you represent the research findings with the intended way of demonstrating
Transferability: full description, so you can transfer the research into another setting
Autenticity: promote fairness, presenting all views, raise awareness.
