Revealed to be manipulative, intending to keep Roderigo's wealth. Its unclear how long he has been using Roderigo. it is also revealed Iago's resentment of Othello and some motivations, such as jealousy that Othello promoted Cassio when he should have promoted Iago. another motivation could be racism, as he uses racial slurs to describe Othello "Lascivious moor", "old black ram", "Barbary horse". When talking to Barbantios, Iago never actually says Othello's name and this reveals to the audience the depth of his hatred to Othello. His abrupt departure to Othello revels his ability to be two faces and lie, as he even lies about not lying.
