Classifications
Pre-hepatic
Bilirubin production exceeds uptake capacity; liver; too much bilirubin eg. Haemolytic disease of newborn or autoimmune disease
Intra-hepatic
Bilirubin not congugated +/- excreted by damaged hepatocytes; eg. infection, hepatitis; prob. not too much bilirubin
Post-hepatic
Obstruction of biliary flow; regurgitation back into system; pale stools; dark urine (+ conjugated bilirubin); normal levels bilirubin
