WHAT IS BURNOUT?
There are 3 definitions, staleness, burnout and slumps!
By Gould & Whitley, 1981
(PES)
- physical withdrawal
- emotional withdrawal
- social withdrawal
-from a formerly enjoyable sport activity.

What causes BURNOUT?
(CMC)
- Chronic stress
which is the imbalance between what is expected of the athlete
[physically, psych & socially]
vs his response capability
- motivational orientation
- changes in athlete
CONSEQUENCES OF BURNOUT:
- Negative self-concept
- Negative attitudes to work, life and others
- Loss of PIE (purpose, idealism & energy)
- Drop out
- Poor PE (physical & emotional health)
By American Medical Association (1966)
which described it as STALENESS
Psychological state of overtraining which manifests as deteriorated athlete readiness
As a result of:
Overtraining a state which athletes have difficulty maintaining their standard training regimens & performance results

By Taylor (1988) who described it as SLUMP:
- unexplained decline in performance
- from previously determined baseline (usual) level that extends longer than expected
- from normal cyclic variations in performance in a given sport
CONSEQUENCES OF SLUMP:
(Negative SP, FT)
- -ve self concept
- Poor indiv performance
- Possibly poor team performance
- Frustration & Anger
