Rationalisation and modern day development of track and field athletics
Amateur Athletic Club
Exclusion clause prevented working class (pro's) from joining the club
Ideals of courage, endeavour and no wagering trying to bring respectability to the sport
Formed by gentlemen amateurs
Established 1866
Amateur Athletic Association
withdrew exclusion clause
Class divide was no longer apparent as professionals ran for money rather than based on their class
1880 established
Still prevented women from competing as unable to meet a dress code/ un-lady like
Women's AAA founded 1922
Women joined Olympics in 1928
Were not allowed to race above 800m
Post WW2
Rules at the time (amateur athletes only)
Britain didn't provide funding for athletes
Trust funds established to protect athletes eligibility
interest in athletics was on the up
No trust funds now as payment is made directly to athletes within the rule set by the IAAF
Industrialisation
Due to migration of people into towns forming cities
Athletics started becoming popular
Led to rural fairs becoming urban fairs
Purpose built facilities and tracks for athletics
Wagering still common along with class divide between amateur and professional
