Political philosophy
What is justice/ a just society
In a just society we need a stimulative definition of justice
John Rawls
Justice as fairness
Very hypothetical theory - not saying that we can create this society
Trying to get us to think about what we mean with justice
Creating a conversation about what we are thinking
The original position
Hypothetical
Imagine that we have a way of creating a brand new society
Assume that people are rational
Talking about all of the different aspects of society
School, food, government etc
Everyone will be randomly assigned to a new person in that society
Natures lottery
We do NOT know who we are going to be
Therefore we probably do not want a patriarchal society because we could be a woman
Eliminates bias
People who are born in harsh environments could have a easier time if we think we could be in their position
Veil of ignorance
We do not know what will happen
2 rules that cannot be violated
Freedom principle
The society must promote freedom
Freedom of press, democracy, religious freedom
The society cannot compromise freedom at all
Difference principle
Key to the theory, what makes it special
Any type of unequal distribution of resources, such as differences in income, must benefit the least well-off in society
You can make how much money you want, but others should benefit from it
If the people who make much money increases their wages but the people in the bottom get stuck, we would have to tax the people in the top so that it benefits the people in the bottom swell
The ratio between the rich and the poor does not matter. It could go from 60/40 to 80/20, but if everyones standard of living increases then it is okay.
The unequal distribution is okay, but only if the people at the bottom also starts to make more if the people at the top is making more
It is not communism sine freedom is allowed, and therefore private property, and that cannot be compromised
Robert Nozick
Refutation of Rawls work
The minimal state
To put Rawls theory to reality we would need a big government which Nozick does not like
Inalienable freedom and rights - with a focus on property
Entitlement theory
IF the government handles your property - your money - then freedom of press is not very useful since the government can do what they want with your property and you do not have any money
Tax is a kind of slavery
If you do not pay your taxes the government punishes you
The government should not be able to take your propert
Freedom of property is the key to all other freedom
Very capitalistic society
The government structure should only do the things that are needed in a capitalistic society
Roads, police etc
If we want roads then the people will have to build them
The government does not have to
People could abuse this system by using free medicare and not contributing themselves
The police is funded via a fond
Very low or no taxes
Could be frivilligt
