Chelladurai's multi-dimensional model of leadership
Leader must use an interactive approach to balance requirements of situation leader and group
Leader uses a style to match the requirements of situation
Identified more than situation being an influence on leadership
Individual or team sport leadership style will differ
Situation can be affected by time available
Complex tasks may take longer to explain
Age, Gender, size of group all play a part
Different types of behaviour the leader may show
Actual behaviour: What the leader decides to do in relation to leadership style
Preferred behaviour: What the group wants
Required behaviour: What the situation demands as a result of an assessment from the leader
Fiedler's contingency model of leadership
Most Favourable situation (all good) Least Favourable situation (all bad)
Moderately favourable (middle ground) Use of person orientated style (democratic)
Suggested the use of autocratic in two opposite situations (all good and all bad)
How favourable the situation is, is dependant on:
Leader-Group relationship
Leader's position of authority
Task
Characteristics of most favourable:
High motivation
Task is clear
Leader has respect
Characteristics of least favourable:
Hostility within the team
Low motivation
weak leader
Styles of leadership
Democratic and person orientated style
Asks for opinions before making a decision
Listening to the senior players to formulate a plan
More sympathetic approach
Laissez-faire style
Allows group to get on with the task
Assumption that senior players will ensure safe preparation
Leader has very little input
Danger that less motivated will stop working
Autocratic and task orientated:
Concerned with results and targets
Coach will need to stay with players to ensure this is met
Leader makes all the decisions and dictates instructions to the team
