Ulcer:
A breach in the mucosa that
extends through the muscularis
mucosae into the
submucosa or deeper
(all the layers of the stomach)

Not precursors of chronic peptic
ulcers, and usually doesn’t progress

Morphology:

Size & shape

Often multiple, but may be single

Gross appearance:

Brownish, hemorrhagic
areas represent
ulcers in the stomach
Microscopic picture:

Deep ulcers involving the entire mucosal thickness (true ulceration) but even
the deeper lesions do not penetrate the muscularis propria
