2.2 Key Ters Vocab
Chemical bonds
Any of several forces, especially the ionic bond, covalent bond, and metallic bond, by which atoms or ions are bound in a molecule or crystal.

-
Elements
Each of more than one hundred substances that cannot be chemically interconverted or broken down into simpler substances and are primary constituents of matter.
Proteins
A class of nitrogenous organic compounds that consist of large molecules composed of one or more long chains of amino acids
-
Polysaccharide
A carbohydrate whose molecules consist of a number of sugar molecules bonded together.
Adenosine triphosphate, ATP
A high-energy molecule found in every cell. Its job is to store and supply the cell with needed energy.
Chemical indicators
Any substance that gives a visible sign, usually by a color change, of the presence or absence of a threshold concentration of a chemical species
-
-
Lipids
Any of a class of organic compounds that are fatty acids or their derivatives and are insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents. They include many natural oils, waxes, and steroids
Molecules
A group of atoms bonded together, representing the smallest fundamental unit of a chemical compound that can take part in a chemical reaction.
Macromolecules
A molecule containing a very large number of atoms, such as a protein, nucleic acid, or synthetic polymer.
-
Carbohydrates
Any of a large group of organic compounds occurring in foods and living tissues and including sugars, starch, and cellulose. They contain hydrogen and oxygen in the same ratio as water and typically can be broken down to release energy in the animal body.
Chemical reactions
A process that involves rearrangement of the molecular or ionic structure of a substance, as opposed to a change in physical form or a nuclear reaction.
-
Polymers
a substance that has a molecular structure consisting chiefly or entirely of a large number of similar units bonded together, many synthetic organic materials used as plastics and resins.
Glucose
A simple sugar that is an important energy source in living organisms and is a component of many carbohydrates.
