Heartburn → retrosternal burning pain due to acid in the esophagus
Hematemesis → vomiting of blood
fresh blood if this blood wasn't
exposed to gastric acids
old blood or even dark brown blood if it was
exposed to gastric acidity
. Odynophagia → painful swallowing. With swallowing of solid food, and in
more severe cases, fluids
Melena → blood in the stool
black or brownish in color because of the
acidic environment
Dysphagia → difficulty in swallowing e.g. tonsillitis
Paterson-Brown-Kelly (Plummer-Vinson) syndrome
increases the risk of post-cricoid esophageal squamous cell carcinom
