Assessments
Formative
Definition: Formative assessments are used by educators to monitor the students learning throughout units. Educators use the data from formative assessments in order to modify and adjust lessons. These are low stakes assessments.
Examples

Think-Pair-Share: This is where the teacher asks a question and the students write down their answer, they then their answer with their partner.
Diagnostic
Definition: Diagnostic assessments are used as a post-assessment or a pre-assessment, the teacher will use this data to determine the students strengths and weaknesses. They will also use the data to adjust instruction.
Examples
Running Records: These are used in order to figure out a students reading level as well as track their reading progress by doing it three times throughout the year.
Pre-test: a small test the students have to take before a new unit or topic to give the teacher information on what they know already.
Benchmark/Interim
Definition: These are assessments that are used to assess students learning and to see where they are in their learning. These are assessments that are used to see if students are on track with their learning in order to do well on further assessments.
Examples
MAP: A computerized test used to show students achievement in math and reading.
STAAR: Standardized test to assess students knowledge learned as well as achievement based on their grade level
Summative
Definition: Theses are assessments that are usually used at the end of a unit. You are taking the students results and comparing it to some form of standards.
Summative assessments are usually pretty high stakes, meaning the carry a high grading value.
Examples

A Final Project: Something that sums up a unit in a project form, whether it be a presentation, or an essay ect. that can be used to assess the students knowledge.
Performance
Definition: Performance assessment is also know as authentic or alternative assessments. This is an assessment that requires the student to show their learning in a form outside of just answering questions on a pre-made test.
Example
Portfolio: To show what the student has learned throughout the unit, by collecting and completing stages and presenting it as a portfolio.
