Reichstag building goes up in flames, Dutch ex-communist Marianus Van Der lobbe caught with matches and blamed. Hitler claims event is 'part of communist revolution'.
Göring was an ex-communist and had history of attempts to burn down other buildings (eg. welfare building); the Hitler did not burn the building down his self, but he knew it was going to happen and he allowed it to.
Hitler used in bis favour as communists were now seen as bad and many communist arrests and beating ups occured shorty after the incident.
Night of the long knifes
30June1934
SS men broke into homes of Rohm and leading members of the SA and arrested them.
Hitler said he was defending Germany against Rohm- he said there was an SA plot to overthrow Hitler and replace army.
Actually reason was SA were seen as thugs and Hitler wanted to disconnect from them. Rohm was demanding a second revolution and Hitler wanted to ensure this would not happen.

Huge attacks on Jews from SS and SA, hundreds of synagogues, homes and shops destroyed. Jews were later fined for the damages
Jews were banned from running shops or businesses. SS and SA started to round up Jews for punihmhment (concentration camps)

Hindenburg issues Reichstag fire decree (law for the protection of the state) using article 48:
suspends civil rights, gave secret police power to people indefinitely

Enabling act
24 March 1933
Needed a 2/3 majority to pass; Hitler use SA to intimidate Reichstag into accepting and scare the people of what might happen if they said no. Many communists arrested after Fire, all absent votes were counted as yes votes.
Gives Hitler the power to pass any law he wanted without conformation from the Reichstag or the president; the people were told it would last 4 years only.
Hitler wanted this because he hated democracy and the Reichstag and he needed a quick executive power

SS and SA men painted yellow and black star of David on the windows of Jewish shops. Also smashed through windows and created anti- Semitic slogans
