The Biological Approach
-
A perspective that emphasises the importance of physical processes in the body such as genetic inheritance and neural function.
-
Genotype and Phenotype
-
-
Example - Adult twins share the same genes, however the way they are expressed (phenotype) may be different, as one may have exercised more.
PKU - a genetic disorder found in babies via a heel prick test. If left unchecked, it can cause learning difficulties in those who carry the genotype. If it is detected early, the child can be placed on a restricted diet and will develop normally.
Evolution and Behaviour
Darwin proposed the theory of natural selection. The main principle was that any genetically determined behaviour that enhances survival chances will continue in future generations.
-
If the individual survives but does not reproduce, the trait won't remain in the gene pool.
Strengths
Uses highly scientific methods (fMRIs and twin studies). With technology advances it is possible to measure biological processes that are not open to bias.
