Artistic Ideas Spread
1494 - a French king claimed throne of Naples and launched an invasion through southern Italy. As war continues, Italian artists move towards Northern Europe for better life. They brought styles and techniques from the Italian renaissance. Northern europeans study italian renaissance work and bring that back as well.
Flemish Painters
Wealthy merchant families helped make Flanders the artistic center of Europe. the first great Flemish renaissance painter was Jan Van Eyek. He used Oil based paints still in use today. He painted layer by layer. he created a variety of colors for clothes and jewelry and brought hi techniques to Italy.
along with techniques, van eyek also displayed unusually realistic detail.his work influenced later artists in northern Europe.
Flemish painting reached its peak in 1550 after an artist named Pieter Bruegel. He was interested in individual details and people. He was skilled in displaying large groups of people. He captured the days of peasant life in paintings of weddings, dances, and harvests. The way he made his painting gave a sense of life and feeling.

German Painters
Dürer's work also influenced another artist named Hans Holbein. He specialized in portraits with extreme detail that made them look almost photographed. He immigrated to England and painted king Henry IIV and other royal members.
German artist Albrecht Dürer traveled to Italy to study in 1494. when he returned he made engravings and woodcuts. Many of the prints portray religious subjects. others are myths and landscapes. His work helped spread the Renaissance styles.
