Signs of abuse

Sexual
Bruises, scratches, sorness, or possible bleeding around genital or rectal areas and also possible pregnancy

Emotional/ psychological
The individual avoiding making eye contact, self harming and talking about how they are not worthy

Neglect
Poor personal hygiene, malnourished and untreated medical conditions
Individual becoming anxious, depressed and conveying suicidal thoughts

At risk groups
Sensory impairment- Individuals may have limited experience of personal relationships and may depend on others to meet their intimate needs and therefore less likely to report abuse.

Dementia- May not recognize that abuse is happening, may not have difficulty remembering and communicating their concerns or experiences. behaviors such as withdrawal and confusion may be mistaken as symptoms of dementia.
Lack mental capacity- May not be able to communicate to others about their experiences and may need to depend on others to make decisions on their behalf.
Physical disability- May need to depend on others and therefore may feel powerless to prevent abuse from happening.
Looked after children- May have had a traumatic life experience which lead to lack of trust and inability to form trusting relationships with adults and other children. They are therefore less likely to report abuse.
