Sawm
What is it?
Sawm is the fourth pillar of Islam. It means fasting.
What
cant
Muslims do while fasting?
When fasting, Muslims cannot eat, drink or be intimate.
When?
Muslims practise Sawm by fasting every year in the month of Ramadan. During Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn until sunset.
What is its significance?
Fasting is important because it helps Muslims develop sympathy for people who are suffering. It also demonstrates self-control and obedience to Allah and helps Muslims remember that Allah is always present.
The Quran states:
‘
O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous.’ (2:183)

have to fast?
Shahadah
What is it?
This is the first pillar of Islam and is Faith. The Shahadah is a declaration of faith spoken by all Muslims and must be spoken publicly when a person wishes to become a Muslim.
Sunni Beliefs
The words of the Shahadah for Sunnis are ‘I declare that there is no god but God, and Muhammad is His messenger.’
Shi'a Beliefs
Shi’a Muslims add to the Shahadah and also state ‘And Ali is the friend of All*h.’ To emphasise the importance of Ali in Shi’a Islam.
What does the Quran say?
The Qur’an states:
‘Worship All*h and associate nothing with Him…’ (4:36)
What does this show?
This verse shows the importance of belief in one God, which is emphasised in the Shahadah. The Shahadah also recognises the role of the prophet Muhammad pbuh and that his life is an example to be followed.
It is not simply enough to speak these words; you must also believe them. The Shahadah is so important it is used in many different situations in the daily life of a Muslim.
Hajj
Salah
What is it?
This is the second pillar of Islam and is prayer. It is every Muslim’s duty to pray to Allah five times a day. Muslims believe that, through prayer, they become closer to Allah.
The Quran states:
‘Guard strictly the Salah, especially the middle Salah. And stand before Allah with obedience.’ (2:238)
which emphasises the importance of Salah for Muslims.
Muslims will stand shoulder to shoulder when praying as a sign of the equality of humans before Allah. Before praying, Muslims must purify themselves. They do this by performing ritual washing, called wudhu.
When?
Muslims pray five times a day which sets the pattern of the day:
1) Dawn, before sunrise - Fajr
2) Midday (after noon) - Zahur
3) Afternoon - Asr
4) Just after sunset - Maghrib
5) Between sunset and midnight - Isha
