Plot
The story circulates around the murder of Thomas Kinnear and his housekeeper Nancy Montgomery in upper Canada.
Two servants of the Kinnear household were convicted for the crime, Grace Marks and James McDermott.
James McDermott was sentenced to death and hanged, but Grace was sentenced to lifetime in prison. A committe hopes to have Grace pardoned and released, and they bring in Dr. Simon to have him write a report on Grace's state of mental health.
Dr. Simon gets emotionally evolved when talking to Grace. They sit and talk in the afternoon while Grace is seewing a blanket for one of the misses in the household were she works as a keeper, while she is an inmate.
Grace Marks is telling about her whole life, everything from her dad abusing here, to getting arrested for a murder. Dr Simon tried to get Grace to recall some memories from the past through her dreams, but she would rather tell about her lifestory
The conversation therapy with Dr Simon does not give results, and he refuses to write a report which would have pardoned her. Instead, Grace is getting hypnosis, which they hope will get her unconciousness to tell them what happened at the murder night.
Dr Simon leaves Canada and Grace to serve in the Army, and ends up being a pasient himself. This illustrates how quick things can change
