In children younger < 5 years
Inflammation & ulceration are common
Large in children (1-3 cm) & small in adults
Juvenile polyposis
syndrome:
Multiple polyps.
May turn malignant
In adults called
retention polyps
Sporadic
Usually single in the
rectum
No malignant potential
Pedunculated, smooth surfaced, reddish and display characteristic cystic spaces
involve mucosal epithelium, lamina propria and muscularis mucosa
hamartomatous polyps
pedunculated with a lobulated contour
resemble a
Christmas tree
where they form an arborizing network of connective tissue
single or multiple polyps, multiple if
associated with a syndrome
Well-developed smooth muscle extends into the polyp and surrounds normal abundant glands
Hamartomatous proliferation of the lamina propria enclosing widely spaced dilated
cystic glands
Inflammation and ulceration are common
