Many factors affect the likelihood that individuals adopt a social, rather than personal, identity. Specifically, individuals are more cognizant of their social identity when similarities between members of their group are underscored or when competition between their group and another collective are emphasized.

Completely intergroup behaviour would be behaviour determined solely by the social category memberships that apply to more than two people.
