How Communication Climate Develops
confirming message:
describes the messages that convey valuing
disconfirming communication:
describes messages with lack of regard
its hard to overstate the importance of confirming messages and the impact of disconfirming ones
confirming messages:
recognition, acknowledgment, endorsement
disagreeing messages:
essentially says "You're wrong."; argumentativeness, complaining, aggressiveness
disconfirming messages:
impervious response, interrupting response, irrelevant response, tangential response, impersonal , ambiguous response, incongruous response
defensiveness:
the process of protecting our presenting self, our face
you can become defensive when communicating with people
there are different phrases to use during a conversation to lessen the defensive climate of communication
once a communication climate is formed, it can take a life of its own and form a pattern, negative or positive
Creating Supportive Climates
even positive messages can be taken the wrong way
evaluation:
judges the other person, usually in a negative way
description:
a way to offer your thoughts, feelings, and wants without judging the listener
controlling communication:
occurs when a sender seems to be imposing a solution on the receiver with little regard for that person's needs or interests
problem orientations:
communicators focus on finding a solution that satisfies both their own needs and those of the others involved
the goal isn't to "win" at the expense of your partner, rather to work out some arrangement where everyone feels like a winner
stratgey vs spontaneity:
defense-arousing messages in which the speakers hide their ulterior motives vs the behavior of being honest with others rather than manipulating them
the leveling is probably the most defense-arousing strategy of all
neutrality vs empathy:
indifference vs rids communication of indifference
in addition to these, there is also superiority vs equality and certainty versus provisionalism
Invitational Communication
invitational communication:
an approach that welcomes others to see what your point of view and to freely share their own
endeavor to create a supportive climate based on value, safety, and freedom
you have a language of choice- you have choices and not obligations
to respond non defensively to criticism one can; seek more info, and agree with the critic
one way to agree with the crisis is the agree with the truth
there is nothing magical about different words but it reflects invitational attitude
invitational communication not only extends freedom to others, but also helps them excercise it themselves

the social tone of a relationship
romances, friendships, and families can be defined by their social tone
communication climates are shared by everyone involved
a relationship can be sunny at one point and cloudy at others
communication climate forecasting is not a perfect science
