Design of operations processes
Design of supply networks
No operations process exists in isolation, it is always part of a greater, integrated supply network
Layout & flow of manufacturing & service provision facilities
Layout of the operations facility determines the physical arrangement of the resources used in the transformation process
Can greatly influence the operations process in terms of cost & efficiency
Layout of manufacturing/service provision facility entails three steps:
Selection of the basic layout
Making a detailed design of the layout
Selection of the process type
Selecting the basic layout type:
Process layout(flexible-flow layout)-In this layout similar processes are grouped together into sections
The fixed position layout- in this layout the product cannot be shifted on account of its size, shape or location.
Product Layout(line flow layout)-the different processes required to manufacture a product or a service are arranged in a consecutive order
The cellular layout(hybrid layout)-In this layout, specific processes are placed in a cell, which is then arranged according to either a product/process layout
Detailed Design Layout: final step in the layout of a manufacturing or service facility entails making a detailed design of the layout
The application of process technology:
Refers to the machines, equipment & apparatus used in the transformation process.
To perform this task effectively
Decide which technology/technologies to use
Foresee how technology can improve specific operational processes
Integrate new technology within existing operations activities
Continuously monitor the performance of the technology
Upgrade the technology when necessary
Job design & work organization
Method study entails the systematic recording of & critical investigation of present & proposed work methods with a view to the development & application of easier and more effective methods in an effort to reduce costs
Work study refers to the different techniques to study all the factors influencing people in the work environment in order to improve in terms of efficiency & effectiveness. It includes method study and work measurement
Job design is of vital importance because it determines how workers perform their various tasks
Work measurement entails the application of techniques designed to determine how long it takes a trained & qualified worker to perform a specific job at a fixed level of performance
