Communicating with Purpose
Definitions
Communication is the process of transferring information by using meaningful symbols so that a message is understood by others.
Message - Specific idea / info sender wants to convey to receivers
4 step communication process
Identify message (idea etc .. to be communicated)
Encode and transmit msg (decide how to express it + medium)
Receive and decode (process by which receiver attributes meaning to the msg)
Confirm the msg with feedback (good or provide more clarification)
Moving from 1 to next step hampered by
Context (ie noisy room)
Media - is an email enough to convey
Conventional approach - effective if receivers understand and do what the sender wants them to do.
Sustainable Ap - While considering productivity, also focus on celebrating diversity, recognizing context of people's struggles, nurturing relationships and building community.
Filtering
Happens when info is withheld or not communicated
Spray and Pray - Shower data and expect to sort
Tell and sell - Tells main points then try to convince to own perspective
Underscore and Explore - like tell and sell, except feedback for misunderstandings sought
Conventional considers best.
PS. If done in smaller group by line managers, more effective.
Identify and reply- Answer only when explicitly asked
Withhold and uphold - no give info even when pressed for it
can recog - person just repeating same msg without further info
Conventional OB - Maxing productivity
S OB - Let stakeholders choose topics, lang ... (their point of view ...), less about selling own idea
healthy community by fostering curiosity, trust and openness to change - not about reconciling differing views, rather enriching them.

Any communication barriers that must be overcome (ie. literal + figurative noise)
