Professional shadowing experience
what was the setting of the experience
It was a quit calm place . its a private practice and doesnt really get that busy. while i was there the most patients there were was 5 patients.
the workers all got along
the patients were all nice and not rude
time went by really fast
when i was deciding where to shadow i choose ati because its on the same block as my job. the workers from ati are usuals and i was already firmiliar with some of them.
Typical Client base of the practice
it was basically a veriety
athletes always get injured. i met a girl who hurt her hurculeas muscle. she was a cross country runner and had been training for a long time . when injured she went to physical therapy because her hurculese muscle was was i great pain and could tear. they used ultrasound on the muscle
the majority of injuries were work injuries.
theres people that came out of surgury . i met two people, on that had a knee replacement and on that had a hip replacement. i was able to see the knee replacement near the end of the rehabilitation and the hip at the beggining . i noticed there was alot of pain in moving the joint and restoring mobility but after everything there is success in the recovery plans.
Equal Mix of men and women
common alignments and treatments they used
When doing the initial evaluations they told me that only the dpt was able to do that. he compared the right side to the left, depending which one was injured. they comare it to see where they need to get to while recovering. One lady had knee surgery. Anthony measured the angle of the leg bent and the leg straight of both right and left leg. her left leg was the one that was injured and he was analizing and adjusting his plan to her rehabilitation.
One thing they do is use anatomy books to explain what muscle or area is hurt and why it is in pain. When I was sent to a physical therapy office because of a strained muscle in my lower back, the DPT pulled out a book with images that showed me where the muscles were, which ones were connected and what areas where affected. They explained my symptoms to me and why I was having them. I would lean to my left side because it would relieve the pain. They explained with great detail that my muscles were contracting because my muscles weren’t pulling and it decreased all the discomfort I had in my back. When shadowing I noticed that everything that was done or shown to a patient was explained with great detail. they explain why the exercises are being done, the benefits of doing them, and methods of doing them on their own.
opinion on my experience
enjoyable
learning the anotomy and how the muscles conect, contract catches my attention
when i was observing my questions never ended
(last sentance )The people were very nice, because i am doing my pta before i get my dpt they told me to come back and apply any time even for summer internships . out of the shadowing experience i managed to make connections that will really help out my future
Things i liked things i didn't like
what impact did this have on pursuing your career
positive
I would plan out the reabilitation plans
seeing how people recovered over time
listening to a persons background story, getting to know them, have connections with clients and knowing why or how the injury happened
Buisness cards were nice
Negative
its not exciting work, its in a quite building
when someone was in pain i felt really really bad just by knowing the pain and it made me not focus completely because
interview with the DPT
The malady?
recovery of motion
conditions/ injuries
Cardiopulmonary rehabilitation,Geriatric physical therapy,Neurological physical therapy ,Orthopedic physical therapy ,Pediatric physical therapy
Primary cause?
changes in joint or muscle comfort and sudden unusual localized pain
ineffective pain medicine relief
ingering pain that does not subside with rest or self-treatment
injury or trauma, which includes broken bones or torn ligaments and tendons
sharp or sudden pain that persists despite rest and self-treatment
Primary treatments
excercises which is physical stress applied to the body, helping improve streagnth, range of motion and mobility
they had an ultrasound which was a deep heating treatment. they apply a small amout is used to absorbe ultrasound waves into muscles and skin
An electrical stimulation unit was used to decrease the pain around an injured area. the physical therapist told me that it helps contract muscles and helps the muscles relearn how to function.
They massage the tissue to help decrease pain
They apply heat which helps circulation and relaxes muscles. they also apply ice to control inflamation
relevent anatomy and physiology
