Mentoring 101
Mentors functions
Coaching on a specific skill: With my buddy I noticed that he wore his hat in school and swore numerous times in school. As he did this, I was able to coach him on the improper ways to act in a school setting.
Challenging mentee to move out of comfort zone: My buddy wanted to stay with his friends during our first mentoring sessions, but I challenged him to more one on one time with me, as well as introducing him to new people(other mentor's and mentee's).

Mentor traits
Outside mentee's hierarchy: Since my buddy is a grade seven student, I am considered to be out of his hierarchy. Because of this I am able to give him advice and guidance on certain things that I have experienced(ex: High school)
Able to make time and be effective: This trait applies to me as a mentor because I have to time to mentor my buddy once a week. Also the concepts that I have learned in class have given me valuable and effective mentoring skills
MBTI Traits: Personality traits that vary from person to person , that affect how they act, socialize and work
Introvert/ Extrovert: Whether a person gets energy from time alone, or by socializing with others
Extrovert: In my opinion, my buddy is an extrovert, he seems to be pretty comfortable talking to new people and not nervous in public settings. Also, I find my buddy tends to think before he speaks . Also, he has a large group of different friends that he may not be very close to.
Judging/perceiving:
Perceiving: An example of a trait my buddy shows in terms of being a perceiver is he left a project to the last minute and ended up rushing to finish it at the beginning of lunch

Nature vs. Nurture
-
Nurture: The qualities that parents have passed on to their children through the way that they were raised
My mentee and his family are very big Senators fans. He say's that his parents have always loved the Sens so that's why he does too.
-
Emotional Intelligence
The capacity to be aware of, control and express your emotions and handle interpersonal relationships empathetically.
Self Regulation: Self regulation which is ones ability to think before they act or speak is something I find my buddy has trouble with. He does things that he knows he shouldn't(ex.wearing hat in school) and say's many things on impulse that should not be said.
Empathy: Empathy which is one's ability to recognize the emotions of others is something my mentee can do fairly well. An example of him showing this, was when he saw his friend in the hallway and asked if she was upset. She was, and she told him about it, but he was able to notice that she looked unhappy.
