1: What are Local and Popular Culture?
culture-system of beliefs
folk culture-small, homogenous
looked at as limiting, specific criteria
local culture; why certain areas define them selves more than others
material culture- based off making things like art, homes,clothing, and food
nonmaterial culture- share beliefs, practices, astetics, and values
popular culture-large,heterogeneous
music,dance, clothing, foods, religions, and astetics are not usually shared
fashion diffusses quickly; copies of princess kates dress within hours
we will look at how local cultures have not been over taken by popular culture

ethnic neighbor hoods- area of almost strictly one ethnicity

groups try to keep customs or cultural traits to themselves and do not want them to be appropriated
commodification- a thing that was not made to be bought or sold becomes bought or sold

cultural landscape- visible imprint of humans on landscape
placelessness- lack on unique culture
cities start to look the same similar arcatexture and stores
global local continum- obvious barrowing and mixing of cultures
traveling is cool due to cutural differences
the mormons created a culture based off of their religious beliefs, they kept moving due t
o fear of prosecution ended up in great plains area
3: How is Popular Culture Diffused?
the amount of time it takes an object or action to diffuse keeps getting smaller
distance decay- further away the less likely to know and understand
time space compression- has to do with the knowledge of things based of the conectivity of those two places

group became greatly popular in colleges and moved to other colleges
producer make key desicions that affect if a band makes it
big 3 sports- baseball, basket ball and football
sports stayed very popular and brought in big revenue but ityother sports such as surfing and skateboarding were growing in popular
extreme sports were gaining popularity fast
world regions act as the ground for development for different things
North America- movie, tv, music, sports, and fast food
Japan- childrens shows, electronic games, and technology
Western Europe- art, fashion, tv, and philosophy
