Correlation
-
Positive correlation: As scores on one variable increase, scores on the other variable also increase
No correlation: As scores on one variable increase or decrease, scores on the other variable may increase or decrease
Negative correlation: As scores on one variable increase, scores on the other variable decrease

Designs

Matched Pairs: A design in which each participant in one condition is matched with a participant in the other condition
Strength: Reduces Participant Variables because each participant has a matching participant in the other condition
Removes order effects because participants only take part in one condition
Weakness: Can be very time consuming because each participant in one condition has to be matched with a participant in the other condition
Self report
-
Types
Interview: An interview is a face to face interaction between researcher and participant in which the researcher asks questions and records answers directly
Weakness: Slower to gather data than questionnaires because the researcher must be present with each participant
Strength: Can allow for more in-depth investigations because the researcher can gather more information than a questionnaire would allow
Questionnaire : A questionnaire is a set of predetermined questions given to participants. They can be carried out face to face, by phone, by post, or online
Weakness: Responses may be biased because participants may change their answers due to Social Desirability
Strength: A relatively quick and cheap way to gather large amounts of data from large groups of participants because researchers do not need to be present to collect data
Unstructured interview: No interview schedule is used, and questions can be added or missed as the interview progresses
Strength: Increased validity because the interviewer can change or adapt questions to gather more information
Weakness: Can be very time consuming because the responses from each interview take longer to analyse than questionnaires
Semi-structured interview: An interview schedule is used (like a structured interview) but questions can be added or adapted (like an unstructured interview)
-
Weakness: Less reliable than a structured interview because questions may have been added or adapted
Structured interview : Questions are asked in a standardised order and the interviewer will not deviate from the interview schedule

Counterbalancing:
Divide the participants into two groups
Half the participants do Condition 1 then condition 2
The other half of the participants do Condition 2 then condition 1.
Random Allocation:
Each participant is given a number. Numbers for the first condition are selected at random until there are enough participants. The rest of the participants are placed in the other condition
