How can the DMCS IT department be improved?
What is our current reality?
Students didn't get on devices until the 3rd day of school to a week after school started
Teachers have limited or no access to the tools they need to teach their content area
IT manager and Tech Coach have a tense relationship, observed by all
BYOD students can't get on wifi
Teacher submitted tech tickets pile up and left un dealt with for weeks
Tech manager works as the system himself, not allowing others to have responsibility and be members of the system
There are only two people in the IT department for a school of 1,600
Tech manager hold all of the control- no one else knows passwords to give to students, download capabilities, etc.
What are area schools doing?
PCS, a school similar in size to us, has a K-5 tech director and a 9-12 tech director
WDM schools has 9+ people in their tech department at a district level and then more at building levels
WDM school has a tech support blog that helps parents, teachers and community members troubleshoot issues
Waukee has 9+ people in their IT departments- including positions called "field analysts" working on solutions to problems happening at the building level
What changes should we make?
A redefinition of what the department is and how it can better align with the vision and mission of the school
Inside of the redefinition of the department a more systematic approach to tech issues needs to be developed and implemented
After the redefinition of the system takes place, the addition of personnel to the department may be needed.
Once the system is redefined, there also needs to be a better definition of roles within the IT department.
If improvements are made, what will be the benefits?
We will more efficiently be able to reach the goal in the mission statement of equipping minds
Teachers will have a better understanding of who does what in the tech department
The tech department will be able to function as a system- not one person running the show
With a better run system, problems can be solved and new challenges can be tackled
