Chapter 9.1 Notes Earthquakes
Earthquakes
The vibration in the ground that result movement along breaks in the Earth's lithosphere
Surface waves
Cause particles in the ground to move up and down in a rolling motion.
Primary waves
Cause particles in the ground to move in a push-pullmotion similar to a coiled spring
Secondary Waves
Cause particles to go up and down at right angles relative to direction the way travels
seismic wave
Energy that travels as vibrations on and in earth
Seismologist
Scientist that study earthquakes.
Seismometer
Measures and records ground motion and can be used to determine the distance seismic waves trave
Seismogram
A graphical illustration of seismic waves
Fault
A break in Earth's lithosphere where one block of toward, away from, or past another
Epicenter
The location on Earth's surface directly above the Earthquake's focus
Focus
The seismic waves originate where rocks first move along the fault, at a location inside earth
