Be a Hearer and a Doer of God's Word
We must be hearers
Gift of Hearing Illustration: Quiet Evening Country...
Potential of our Hearing...an-echoic chamber, 1/2 hour...Acoustic s e scientist F. Alton Everest describes the experience
What good is it to have beautiful sounds, without ability to do something about?
Your brain enables you to hear one conversation out of many in a crowded room, a microphone does not, recording might be unintelligible
While Jesus was on earth, he repeatedly told crowds to listen...
Read Mt 15:10
Listen to what he was teaching from the Bible
Why add that last statement, "get the sense of it"?
Many of those Jesus spoke with were distracted, prejudice, human philosophy, work, family, illness...sound familiar?
Jesus here was talking about having keen spiritual hearing? Why is that important? Because it effects our life, now and into the future...our faith is fueled by knowledge,
We can see that faith follows what we hear, that's a big jump! From words on a page, or from a mi to greater faith, missing, what happens in between?
Read Romans 10:10,
our heart is affected (inner person, emotions, feelings, thoughts)...
How are doers of God's word blessed?
Read Mt 7:24
Building on rock, house looks the same from the ground up, when do you know the difference? Storm
Blessings now, and into the future, God's approval and everlasting life,
Many will miss out on everlasting life by 17 inches? Average distance between mind and heart...
Why do we need to pay attention to how we listen?
Read James 1:22-24
Could we read God's word regularly, even daily and still miss problems that are developing in us? How? James uses Greek word for "look" that denotes scrutiny or careful consideration, so what was the man's problem? Turned away without acting
This man was carefully examining the scriptures, but what was missed? Heart, wasn't moved action-Paul warns Heb 5:11, dull in hearing, (eg. like recorder not filtering sounds)
Each of us here today, we can clearly hear the words from stage, see the words printed on our Watchtower and in our Bibles, but do we allow it to motivate us? Do we allow it into our hearts...
Deceive our-self with false reasoning-"once saved always saved", just coming to meetings is not enough...
Meetings completely equip us...
Develop good routine family worship...if we buy a new car and do not maintain it according to manufacturers instructions, who is to blame, manufacture or owner who failed to do routine maintenance

Trap has been set
What effect does listening to God's Word have on us?
How is God's word like a mirror in our life?
Experience: Waldo Moya: "Many People Hated Me"
As we make application and build appreciation for God and his teaching we can even uproot "strongly entrenched" things...these are things the average person has little success changing about themselves, this is sometimes what people mean when they say, "this is who I am"
Read James 1:25
...not only peers into Gods word but continues in it, persists and makes personal application...Read carefully, dig deep, ask questions about ourself...
How do we know if we are getting the sense of what God is telling us?
How does a father know if his son really listened to what he said? Illustration: Family Dinner and Fire
Are we doing what our heavenly father has asked from us? That is how we know if we are not just hearers but doers..
People get a lot of praise today for the works they do, much of which is done in God's name, volunteer work, philanthropy...people don't see the smoldering house, they only see the works, do we get the sense of it?
In Jesus day there were those who claimed do be good hearers, do we remember what they said?
Read Mathew 7:21-23
How can we imitate Christ in being doers of the Word?
We know Jesus set the example, let's listen to what that is...
Read Mt 9:35-38
What work was Christ fully engaged in? Preaching and teaching about God's Kigndom, he felt the importance, it even effected how he felts about people
He was looking for appreciative hearers, he taught his disciples to teach the same message and they did...government officials would even say, "everyone is talking about this religion" because are everywhere
Jesus also gave his followers exciting news about this work
Read Acts 1:8
Jesus made a two-fold point in his parting comment (1) Tactfully but firmly that timing of the outworking of Jehovah's purposes was not their concern...(2) This great work would expand beyond just Jerusalem, eventually to Judea, Samaria...and to the most distant part of the Earth
10 days later-Pentecost 33 CE, holy spirit poured out, disciples speaking of the magnificent things of God-same day 3000 baptized, short time Jerusalem filled
Opposition in Jerusalem-->spread out to Judea and Samaria, with what result? Increase...Samaria accepted this word, then the Gentiles, but what about the last statement Jesus said? Distant part of the Earth? About 2000 years separates us from these brothers and yet we share the same commission.
Though the spirit does not miraculously move us to speak in tongues today, we are producing literature in more than 900 languages today
Compare: 1918—14 lands reach by preaching, 3868 publishers...As of this last year there are 240 lands reporting, with an average of 8,132,358 publishers preaching each month, and more than 260,000 publishers baptized...
Numbers are always interesting but it's what those numbers represent...ones like Waldo Moya...
Are we really getting the sense of what Christ is saying at Mathew 9? He says the Harvest is great and the workers are few...there is urgency in Jesus' voice...
What is the best way to help a sleeping village imperiled by a dam about to burst? Bail water from behind the weakening dam? Beautifying the doomed village? No! The villagers must be awakened to the danger, and helped to escape. Those spiritually asleep today are in grave danger since this system of things is passing away soon, what is our attitude toward warning?
Does getting the sense of Acts 1:8 mean that we all have to leave our homes and go to the most distant part of the earth? Jesus was speaking to those in Jerusalem, and we may already be living in the most distant part of the earth in respects to Jerusalem. The point is: no matter where we are if we can reach out and go somewhere else or we can preach in on our own territory, follow example we can reach out to those who have not had opportunity to hear the truth, whether near or far.
