- - - - MANPOWER REGULATIONS: The war years saw a dramatic policy change on the position of women in paid employment. In 1942 manpower regulations required women who did not have the primary responsibility for the care of children or other relatives to work outside the home, even if they were married and keeping house.
        
        Post war governments were acutely short of labour and turned to married women
        
        In 1947 married women formed 19.8 per cent of the female workforce, 34.3 per cent in 1954, and 42 per cent in 1961.
