How are Local Cultures Sustained?
Other Details
Assimlation
Trying to make all the Indians "Americans". discourage native practices, punished for using native language. Rewarded for being the most american with jobs and citizenship, also taught women to be good housewives.
Many of the countries governments have apologized since then
Custom
: Practice that a group does regularly
To Sustain Local Culture people must retain their customs. The customs may change a little over time but still have to same base despite the influence of popular culture.
Culture Appropriation
: process by which other cultures adopt customs and knowledge and use them for their own benefit.
During Colonization Europeans tagged cultures as savage or Mystic. This coined tourist destinations
This exploits the local culture in an unauthentic way that isn't accurate. "Freezing a culture in a time that never existed"
Rural Local Culture
Rurality enables local cultures it define their own space where they can practice their way of life with out interference
Some cultures are having a hard time trying to find a balance between tradition and modern laws and policies.
South Dakota, Pennsylvania, and Virginia popular places for Anabaptist groups.Diffused by now to other areas
Anabaptist: Broke from the Catholic Church and the Protestant. Believes in Adult baptism and re baptism.
Also broke from the state; stressed pacifism and was prosecuted for it
Mostly shown in stereotypical ways.

culture because of the Isolation
Makah American Indians

They did it to "reignite" their culture and bring them back to their roots
They had to fight for the right to be able to do the hunt
Had to jump through a lot of hoops to be able to do it. they had to use a gun instead of the traditional harpoon etc
Little Sweden, USA
Some people says its a scam for the money and the tourist
Neolocalism: displaced ethnic groups will celebrate their heritages in locations alien to their origins.
Urban Local Cultures
Ethnic Neighborhoods
: an area in a city that is different than the rest of the city that a certain culture can practice their customs
Runners of the New York Marathon can see many neighborhoods during their run
Ethnic Neighborhoods is a place to show off culture and set people apart from one another
The Greatest challenge to local culture in cities is the immigration of new people, popular culture, and other ethnic groups
Places are starting to change to accommodate the new people flowing into the cites
Guest Field Note
Most people assume one of 2 thing about the town; Its a tourist trap made to make money or a town full of ethnic love for Sweden. While its just a town trying to figure out how it fits in this ever changing world of ethnic complexities and answer the question; Who am I?
Local Culture and Cultural Appropriation
They try to keep their culture to themselves
Authenticity
: is an issue when it comes to the commodities. People come to expect a certain thing while in real life its more complex and it changes all the time. Almost the opposite of stereotype
Field Note
As you run through New York you will be surprised by the stark contrast of the different cultures. A good example is when the Hasidic Jewish is a lot quieter than most of the neighborhoods and they have different traditional dress
Authenticity of Places
Guinness and the Irish Pub Company
Is a company meant to cash in on the mystique of the Irish pub. It also tries to make it less obvious that they are a "tourist trap"
The company has 5 basic floor plans and implements them into each place and provides the atmosphere.
They provide food suggestions, training, music suggestions, and other elements to make it seem authentic
People search for untouched authentic culture while in reality all culture has in some way been touched by external forces
A Real Pure Authentic Culture is merely a myth made by the minds of the people.
Commodification
: Something originally not regarded as something for sale becomes a commodity that can be bought or sold or traded.
Commodification becomes a problem when it exploits certain culture or offends them. Normally worse when an outsider exploits a cultural trait.
