Osmotic Pressure
Is when a semipermeable membrane only allows the passage of the molecules of a solvent and prevents the passage of other substances.
-
During Osmosis
there is a spontaneous net flow from the diluted compartment to the compartment containing the most concentrated solution
-
The just amount of pressure needed to prevent the net flow of solvent from a dilute solution to a more concentrated solution
Types of solution
Hypertonic
There is a higher concentration of dissolved particles, so there is a net flow of water out of the cell wall, which shrinks.
Isotonic
There is an equal concentration of inside to outside of the cell, so the osmotic pressure is the same of the interior towards the outside.
Hypotonic
There is a lower concentration of dissolved particles and there is a net flow of water into the expanding cell wall.
