Vikings
Religion and mythology
They had many gods
The important ones lived in Asgard, which was connected to our world by a bridge (rainbow)
Thor was the one who protected the humans, so vikings trusted him and asked him for help in difficult situations
-
Vikings believe that there were seven worlds, Midgård being the one of humans and Asgard of the gods
-
Vikings believed that not many received after life. Only the brave warriors who died a hero's death could go to Valhalla, a sort of paradise for the warriors where they still battled each other every day.
They weren't especially religious, but took influence from Christianity which eventually spreaded. The vikings believed strongly in mythology
Eventually, Christianity overpowered the Scandinavian mythology
A reason for this was that trading with the southerners (who were Christian) was easier when they were Christian themselves
Sailors
The viking's boats were the best and fastest type of travel at the time. They were also strong and stable, carrying the vikings through storms and other hardships
-
By exploring, they knew the seas better than anyone at the time
-
Founders of Europe
-
-
Established the three great kingdoms of Denmark, Sweden and Norway
Raiders and conquerers
-
-
The Vikings robbed monasteries because their 'god was weak' and their treasures were 'theirs to take' and the monasteries were unarmed
They continued attacking English costs, eventually spreading to other countries
-
The vikings were the most successful warriors of their time although their equipment (armour, weaponry etc.) was nothing special
-
Conquered a lot of area in what we call now Russia, such as Kiev and Novgorod etc. Helped also in founding the first Russia by founding the Russian city Rus and the state of Normandy in France, cities like Dublin and York and the Norman empire in southern Italy
-
When?
During the late 8th and 11th century but were considered as vikings for only 200 years. Since the Middle ages they are known better as Icelanders, Swedes and Danes.
-
Traders and merchants
-
They had towns trough which most of the trading went (Haitabu for example: it was famour for hosting ships from many other countries)
Viking merchants imported glass and silk from the Byzantine Empire. They also imported spices, fine wool and furs, wine, slaves and other valuables.
Settlers and Farmers
The vikings spent most of their lives in villages as farmers, fishermen and craftsmen. Most vikings were farmers. They grew crops such as barley, oats and rye and kept cattle, goats, sheep, pigs, chickens and horses
The map shows explorations, settlements and routes of the vikings and approximated years they were settled in
