February 1, 1960: Student Sit-ins
Students would organize sit-ins at integrated lunch counters to challenge the racial structure of society in the South. This started the first of many nonviolent protests in the Civil Rights Movement. 
May 1961: Freedom Rides
The Congress of Racial Equality, SNCC, and other Civil Rights Groups began Freedom Rides. They would ride the buses throughout the south to protest the segregated interstate transportation system.
