Advantages and Disadvantages of Output Devices
printers
advantages
laser
very quiet. Supplies last longer. High printing speed. Very reliable. No wet pages that smudge. Cheaper to run. High quality printouts.
inkjet
relatively small compared to the laser printers. High quality print. Quietness in operation. Cheaper than laser printers
dot matrix
cheaper to run than inkjet printers. Can be used to print multi-part stationary. Can be used with continuous stationary.
multimedia projectors
many people can see what is presented. Can be used to show a video to a large number of people.
wide format
can print larger than A4. No need of professional services.
3D
easier to produced customised products. Cheaper than traditional 3D. Can convert designs to prototypes.
disadvantages
dot matrix
very noisy. Low quality printouts. Text can look dotty. Unsuitable for printing graphics. More expensive.
multimedia projectors
not high quality images. Cooling fan creates noise. Requires a darkened room. You need to know how to set it up and run the equipment.
inkjet
high cost of the ink. Ink smudges. Cartridges do not last long.
3D
dangerous materials in its manufacture. The manufacture of goods using 3D printers is less skilled. Limited number of materials that can be used in its manufacture.
laser
expensive to buy. Colour expensive are very expensive.High power consumption. Large.
wide format
expensive if you only use it occasionally. Quite large
monitors
advantages
IPS
bigger angles that make it easy to a group see it. Thinner than CRT. Less glare on the screen. More energy efficient.
LED
thinner than CRT but the same as LCD. Lighter than CRT. Energy saving. Better picture quality.
TFT
they are very light and this is why they are used in laptop computers. They are very thin so they don't take up space. Cheap to run. Easily positioned. Less radiation comes out. Not get very hot. Not create glare. Good when only one person needs to see the screen.
CRT
Can be used with a light pen to produce and edit drawings using CAD software. Sometimes used when several people need to see the screen.
disadvantages
TFT
very difficult to repair. Narrow viewing.
IPS
not as energy efficient as a LED. Not very good graduating shapes. Not as good when used in dimly-lit rooms
CRT
take up large amount of space on the desktop. Generate a lot of heat. Glare on the screen can be a problem. Heavy. Flicker can cause headaches.
LED
more expensive than LCD. If you sit off-centre the visibility is poor.
others
advantages
motors
issues control sistems
buzzers
make signals that warns you
heaters
you can switch it on or off
speakers
can play the CD will working .
light/lamps
light sensor to sense the light level
disadvantages
buzzers
sometimes it doesn`t warn you
heaters
they can overheat
motors
can confuse
light/lamps
sensors can read badly
speakers
some have bad quality sound
