Competition versus Cooperation versus Coopetition
Competition
Ecom promotes worldwide competition
In order to assess the attractiveness of e-commerce opportunities, it is vital for firms to identify competitors & the relevant competitive intensity
The actual & potential rival offerings as well as the substitutes a buyer might consider
Direct competitors offer a similar/competing product by offering close substitutes for each others products/services
Adjacent competitors do not currently offer products/services as direct substitutes
Indirect competitors should also be considered
Substitute producers from different industries could perform the same function, although not being identical substitutes
Cooperation
Developing a new technological standard can be costly & complex process that is best achieved if firms pool their resources to determine the standard jointly
Joint developments are necessary to develop compatible products will be produced
Coopetition
Implies that firms both compete & coordinate with each other
Firms need to examine both internal & external possibilities
Strategies for feedback
Technical design is available to other companies
An open design is the route to speedy growth & demand-side economies
Advisable when the company is not sure if its new technology will take off
Increases the value of the technology for the firm that developed it, as well as for those firms that adopt it
Control implies that the owner of the technology maintains exclusive ownership through intellectual property rights
The owner will glean all profits but it may not entrench the new technology
