Linear Motion
Speed and velocity
Speed (Scalar quantity)
Speed =Distance/Time (m/s)
Speed time graphs:
Line going up or down will signal increase/ decrease in speed
Straight line constant speed
Area under line =distance travelled
Distance time graphs:
Increased line = constant speed
line going down = movement in the opposite direction
Straight line no movement
Velocity (Vector quantity)
Speed is distance in a given direction
Velocity=Displacement/Time
Acceleration and impulse
Acceleration: Change in velocity/time
Change in velocity= final velocity - initial velocity
Velocity increase= acceleration increase
Velocity decrease= acceleration decrease
Impulse: the time it takes for a force to be exerted on a body
Mass and weight
Mass: quantity expressing the quantity of matter a body possesses
Weight: the gravitational force exerted of an object
Mass x Gravity = Weight (newtons)
Distance and displacement
Displacement: shortest route in a straight line between the starting and finishing position
Distance: path a body takes from it's starting to its finishing position
