The dog did not mean anything to the other guys, because he was old and sick. Otherwise, he meant a lot to Candy. Sometimes the psyical value is bigger than the physical.

In the begging of the Movie, a women in red ran away.
The red colour can represent danger, fraidness or blood.

George, Lenny and Candy plans to Escape from the farm and begin their own adventure/dream.

Lenny and Curley's wife are alone in the barn. She flirts with him, but Lenny is told either not to talk to or touch the woman.
The woman lets Lenny touch her hair, but when she wants him to stop, he does not listen. She begins to scream and Lenny picks her up and make her stop. He did not mean to, but she got her throat hurted and died.
