Solving Problems in Groups and Teams (Setting the Stage for Problem…
-
I was surprised by how many problem solving formats there are. When you are doing it, you don't really think about which one you are using. But there are so many that looking back on past group conflicts you can really see where some worked and others didn't. I think in my experience I have used, and had the most success with, Panel Discussion. However, I think each form holds its place and when possible the best one for that specific situation should always be used.
I was also the most bothered by how many problem solving formats there are. Reading through it, I really noticed how many discussions over had that have gone badly only because of a bad choice of format. The SM work i do is so team oriented that almost all problem solving happens in groups, so when things go bad it kinda sucks to retrospectively realize how they could have gone better.
I really want to learn more about the steps in problem solving. Because i do so much of it for my work, It would be such a helpful tool to be able to recognize and take appropriate action for each of these steps every time we reach them, so our team communication goes more smoothly and the problem gets solved more quickly. Especially with the work I do, Quick problem solving in groups is vital, and being able to recognize the steps needed to solve problem is something i'm really interested in.
