Teachers' Lives
Black Teachers
"I learned to love the students. I learned them just like I did my black students, and we became endeared toe each other," (pg. 118).
Integration was difficult for both students and teachers. I think it is so inspiring to see a teacher, such as Cleopatra Goree, look past all the racial norms and do what she is there to do.
"Between 1954 and 1971, the nation lost 31,584 black teaching positions and 2,235 black principalships, even as the total number of jobs in public education grew," (pg. 119).
Black teachers had to constantly think about job security no matter what their teaching performance displayed.
"It's not as thought we were monkeys from the zoo, but that is how we were treated. And I was angry." [Gloria Register, pg. 120).
White Teachers
"Whites often expected little of their black students," (pg. 120).
Expectations
Expectations differed tremendously from black and white teachers. Black teachers tended to have higher expectations for black students.
"Now it seemed clear that when teachers held low expectations, student achievement was actually hindered," (pg. 137).
Curriculum
Black teachers wanted to incorporate into the curriculum a sense of pride for black students. Some did this by having an afrocentric based curriculum (pg. 139).
Workshops
"Black and white teachers attended workshops to learn from each other's experiences," (pg. 117).
Where integration was accepted and encouraged, teachers of both races realized they could learn from each other.
Acts/Programs
Jean Wofford
-
Developed a plan to train teachers from Peace Corps to better work with students from diverse backgrounds. Her plan involved training from a master teacher and taking certain classes (pg. 124-125).
-
Most Effective Schools
Provided schools in poor neighborhoods with extra funding for smaller classes, pre-K, and more support staff. This support staff could include people such as social workers and reading specialists.
-
National Teacher Corps
"We had a lot of adventures in the Teacher Corps, but mainly we learned how to teach. We learned a lot about child development and psychology, about curriculum development and what it means to write a lesson plan, about what it means to individualize for students and how you do evaluation to know what kids have learned," (pg. 129).
-
Violence
White Mobs
"[George Wallace] announced he would use police power to remove black teachers from white public schools," (pg. 117).
"Segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever!" (pg. 117).
MLK Death
"He didn't want to be caught with this white chick in the car...We were both praying no one saw me," (pg. 128).
The assassination of Martin Luther King sparked even more controversy between races. If there was any improvement, it was quickly set back after this tragic event.
