World War II (Germany http://www.dixiewing.org/files/Germany_WWII.pdf…
World War II
The Nazi Party: The Nazi party was lead by Adolf Hitler. This group ruled Germany from 1933 to 1945. This group had the same means as their leader so they wanted to kill Jews. Nazi took over Germany and wanted to rule more countries but lost to the Allies in the end.
-
Adolf Hitler: Adolf Hitler was a major person in World war II. He was the main supporter of killing Jewish people. He did this because he believed that the Jews had betrayed Germany in World War II. The blaming of the Jews lead to over 6 million Jewish people dying.
-
German Surrender: Germany was the first of the Axis side to surrender. On May 8th 1945, only 8 days after their leader Adolf Hitler committed suicide, the Germans surrendered. This lead to the rest of the Axis surrendering soon after making the Allies victorious. Only because one man took his own life.
-
Similarities:The main goals of the Axis countries were to gain more land. Besides their goals they also all believed that every country should consist of its own race. These qualities made them become allies naturally.
The Name:The Axis got their name because of the first 2 members of this group, Germany and Italy. These countries where both lined up in a straight line in the center of the earth. And the definition of the axis is the line of the center point of a sphere. The Earth being the sphere and the line between them being the center point. Once other countries joined it was no longer a line, but the name stuck.
Post war plan:After the war the axis powers, especially Hitler wanted to have "living space" for the "master race" as he put it. This is why Hitler and other Axis countries did not like America. Because besides native Americans, there is no signature American race that lives here. He believed that the race of each country should be the only race to live in that country.
Attack on Pearl Harbor: On December 7, 1941 Japan launched a surprise attack on the Naval base Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. This ambush that was soon called Attack on Pearl Harbor and was not only the reason why over 2,400 Americans died, but it is also the reason America first declared to be a part of World War II with the Allies.
-
The Great Depression: while World War II did create an overall massive disaster, it did have one positive effect. The start of the war ended the Great Depression. This happened because America had to provided arms to other countries and because with all the men gone fighting, women were forced into men’s workplace.
-
Drafting: By late 1942 America had to start drafting men of any age from 18 to 64, though men under 38 were usually chosen. Drafting is when the government has to select random men to join the military. Most men had a hard decision to make, they could either volunteer for the military so they could pick what they wanted to do in the military and maybe be in a safer job. Or they could hope they were not drafted, and if they were, then they would have less of a choice for what to do.

France
France Surrender:The French surrender towards the start of the war on July 10, 1940. At this time German Nazis occupied three fifths of France. The Germans were mainly in northern France and in the entire specific coast.
The German Occupants:Even once France surrendered Germany occupied most their land. This continued until June 6, 1944. That day was also known as D-Day.
Prisoners of War:2 million French criminals were sent to camps in Germany. Of those 2 million about one third were let go for many different reasons. From there half the privates were sent to do work in agriculture and the other half were sent to work in factories.
Atomic Bomb: In one of the saddest and most well known events in world war 2, 2 atomic bombs were dropped on Japan. The first bomb dropped on Hiroshima August 15, 1945 followed up by another bomb on Nagasaki 3 days later. This attack killed tens of thousands of the Japanese and lead to their surrender.
The Tripartite: Japan was one of the countries along with Italy and Germany that signed the Tripartite. This lead to the start of the Axis. Most if not all countries of the Axis just wanted more land in Europe and Asia.
Kamikaze:Kamikaze was a suicidal Japanese war tactic. In this tactic Japanese pilots willingly crash their plane into American ships. The country did this before they had the technology to launch missles. The people that did this were considered very honorable.
Allies Strategy: The Allies had a strategy mostly based off of defense. This ment that the Axis countries had to be vary ofenseve. This definetly applied to Germany.
The goal of the Allies: The Allies was lead by three main people, Franklin Roosevelt from the USA, Winston Churchill from England, and Joseph Stalin from the Soviet Union. The goal of all these men was to defeat the Axis and make the world as peaceful as possible after the war. However most countries did not agree on what this peaceful world would look like.
Fun Facts:England, the USA, and the Soviet Union were called the Big Three.
Old blood and guts was the nickname of General Patton.
One quote from Winston Churchill was,”a joke is a very serious thing"
Hungary
German Alliance:In November 1940 Hungary Aliened with Germany. This was in hopes of staying safe from the Soviet Union. This lead to Hitler demanding Hungary fight along side them. This is why Hungary declared war against the Soviet Union on June 29, 1940.
-
Hungary’s Betrayal: The Betrayal of Hungary is a long and complicated story. But to sum it up, first, after a change of political leaders Hungary wanted to join the other side. After this Hitler and the rest of Germany threatened Hungary for doing this in multiple ways, in the end Hungary was considered to be Germany’s “puppet.”
-
German Invasion: One of the reactions of Germany once Hungary tried to switch sides led to the Germans invasion on Hungary. This happened in March 1944. The invasion led to more threats and attacks from Germany.
Soviet Union
Pact with Adolf Hitler:In August 1939 the Soviet Union formed a non-aggression pact. This was not an alliance but it was a good start. However, this only lead to Hitler breaking the pact soon after.
Invasion of the Soviet Union: On June 22, 1941 Germany invaded the Soviet Union. This invasion was Germany's biggest military operation in WWII. Hitler and Germany's decision was thought of as a betrayal by the Soviet Union because of the pact they signed.
Interesting Facts:The Soviet Union had 60 times the number of casualties that America had.
25 million people were left homeless.
One fourth of The Soviet Unions population died, it took decades for their population to return back to normal.
26 million people were fighting for the Soviet Union yet 40 million people of that country died.
The Battle of Britain: Germany had invaded and taken over most of Europe at this time and England was the only major country left standing. Because of this, Germany wanted to take over this country as well, but first they planned on weakening England’s Air Force. This lead to Germany bombing Britain on July 10, 1940 in hopes of accomplishing their goal. The bombing continued for months.
-
Why did Britain join the war:Britain joined the war after Germany invaded Belgium. Germany wanted England to stay out of the war. But Britain had to once Belgium was invaded because they signed the treaty of London in 1839 which states that England would pretext Belgium .
The Battle of Britain day:On September 15,1940 Germany grew tired of waiting for Britain to crumble. So their leader Hitler decided on bombing London to take over. In the end England shot most of the bomber planes and were considered the winners of the Britain Battle.
-
Italy
Operation Husky:This is also known as the invasion of Sicily. Allied forces had found out that Italians and Germans would be in an area just off of the coast of Italy. So they went there ready to attack only to find that about 100,000 troops had fled earlier.
Tripartite:As mentioned, Italy was also a part of the Tripartite pact. But in more detail, this pact made an enemy of Germany an enemy of Japan and Italy and vise versa. This pact put each of the three countries in more wars and could have started to overwork the countries military.
The Italian Campaign:This was where all the leading Allied countries tried invading Italy from July 10, 1943, to May 2, 1945. They did this to try and get rid of Italy in the war. If successful, this battle would dramatically shift the odds in favor of the Allies.
